The Fish are Biting

trips brook trout-2011May 26, 2011

It has been awhile since we last updated obviously but we are just now getting into the spring fishing business.  Water levels remained high this spring and are finally getting down to fishable levels.  Our first group of fishermen arrived last week and have had some "excellent" fishing both here on Ross Stream and in surrounding areas.  Long Lake and Umsaskis Lake are producing some good fishing as well.    The level on the stream is perfect for canoeing while, at the same time, is wadeable in several spots.

If the weather cooperates and does not get too warm soon, the fishing should last well into June this year.  We will have some guided trips next week and expect to do well with those folks.

Below right is a picture of another way of cooking trout.  One of our guests used pecan wood on our gas grill. A tasty meal fit for kings and queens.

Other news since we updated:  we drove into camp on May 4th, which was a month later than last year.  The road coming in is fine, no big problems other than a little bumpy, which is usual for this time of year.  We are just starting to green up in our area.  From what people are telling us, we are a little behind areas south of us including our old haunts, Chamberlain Lake.

Our hummingbirds appeared for the first time on May 11th.   We always enjoy their arrival.

A month ago today, April 26th, John had carpel tunnel surgery on his casting hand of all things.  But......to his delight (AND MINE) a month later, he is able to cast his fly rod and we have had several tasty meals of brook trout as a result.

We have done one shuttle trip so far this spring and that was for canoers doing the St. John River from Baker Lake to Red Pines Campsite.  We had never been over in that country before so enjoyed the new scenery but it was a long day.  10 hours and 250 miles later, we were ready to get out of the vehicles.  They reported to us after their trip that the river was fine for canoeing but the water was too high for good fishing.  That was May 18th to the 22nd.

We have been busy with the usual spring clean up projects around camp.  Our daily walks on the driveway provide Maggie's entertainment.  She is flushing a minimum of 4 birds each time and usually it is around a dozen.  We have been keeping her on a leash recently as we believe the birds are nesting on their eggs right now.   We are predicting a good fall season on birds if our walks and drives are any indication.  wading for brookieswading ross stream

To sum up, the fish are biting, the frying pan is frying and life is good.

Happy Memorial Weekend All,
John and Reggie
